The Nissan GT-R is the brand's flagship sports car, offering some of the most sophisticated go-fast technology in the world. It may not look as arresting as a Porsche 911 Turbo or a Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 or an SRT Viper--but it's just as easy to get pulled over in one.

The GT-R draws on a heritage of performance from a long line of Japanese-market Nissan Skyline sport coupes, not all of which were top-shelf sports cars. Today, just a quick look at the GT-R's spec sheet is enough to see it's a supercar. It has a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-6, now making 530 horsepower (up from 473 hp at its introduction), and it follows a unique layout, with the engine in front and transmission in back. All-wheel drive does its best to put all that power to the road.

In silhouette only, the GT-R isn't as exotic as some of those other fanboy dream cars. Some enthusiasts might be put off by its more minimalist, conservative look. But up close, the GT-R delivers on the details, with the rakish roofline, rear wing, and quad circular rear lights. And inside, the GT-R is quite the departure from any other current Nissan product—including an instrument panel design that angles its controls toward the driver.

Whether or not you're a fan of the look, the GT-R delivers with dizzying acceleration, including 0-60 times of about 3.0 seconds and a top speed upwards of 193 mph. Shifts are made through an automated manual gearbox. In normal driving, the GT-R's performance potential is hard to tap into, but push a little faster when you get the chance and the driving experience is a little more detached and video-game-like than it should be. That said, handling is excellent and the variable power-split all-wheel drive system helps make you both fast and safe.

A number of small changes were introduced on the GT-R for 2010. Brakes were upgraded, with more rigid lines, and the stability control system was updated. Also, smoke-finish RAYS forged-aluminum wheels were introduced, along with a Cold Weather Package and iPod interface. Base and Premium models were offered with the latter getting heated seats and a Bose audio upgrade.

Nissan discontinued the Launch Control feature due to excessive warranty claims. Since launch control helped yield the former GT-R its excellent acceleration times—with some testers saying the GT-R is a second or more slower to 60 mph without it—Nissan restored it in a limited way for the 2012 model year, while it also boosted total output to 530 hp. Those changes bring the supercar's 60-mph runs down to about 3.0 seconds, according to buff-book numbers. Other changes for the 2012 model year include a special "black" edition and revised interior trim.

Nissan has already announced a more extensive round of improvements for 2014. In addition to some structural reinforcements, the new GT-R gets revised suspension mounts that lower its center of mass. Peak output for the engine remains at 545 hp and 463 lb-ft, although mid-range response has been improved with high-output fuel injectors and revised turbochargers.

The 2012 Nissan Murano

Post by admin on Wednesday, February 29, 2012

The 2012 Nissan Murano ranks 10 out of 23 Affordable Midsize SUVs. This ranking is based on our analysis of 44 published reviews and test drives of the Nissan Murano, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

Reviewers say the 2012 Nissan Murano is a top pick for its high-quality interior and nimble handling, but still can’t quite figure out how they feel about its convertible version, the Murano CrossCabriolet.

For 2012, the Nissan Murano continues with its successful formula of fun driving dynamics, good fuel economy, a powerful engine and a near-luxury-level interior. Even base models impress reviewers.

But test drivers can’t stop talking about the convertible trim, the Murano CrossCabriolet, which was introduced in 2011. The only other convertible SUV on the market is the Jeep Wrangler, but the Wrangler and the Murano CrossCabriolet have very little in common. Rather than trying to be an open-roofed, back-to-nature off-roading champ like the Jeep, Nissan markets the Murano CrossCabriolet as an open-roofed fair-weather cruiser. But test drivers can’t decide if it has met that goal or not.

On the one hand, it’s the first vehicle to combine crossover driving dynamics with a convertible roof, and some writers are intrigued by the idea. But most journalists say the CrossCabriolet looks bloated and is too heavy to be sporty. Plus, it’s plagued with many of the issues that usually affect convertibles, like a body that shakes when it goes over bumps, since it doesn’t have a solid roof to help provide rigidity.

Overall, testers agree that the hardtop Murano is a great SUV, though it’s a bit on the expensive side. They say that for sporty driving, you’ll be better off with a real roadster, but the Murano CrossCabriolet still wins nods for its luxury-level interior and top-down cruising potential.

Other SUVs to Consider
The midsize crossover market is fiercely competitive, and though the Murano is a good pick, there are other commendable choices out there. The five-seat Jeep Grand Cherokee ranks highly for its combination of on-road handling and its interior comfort. Its fuel economy ratings aren’t nearly as good as the Murano’s, but it offers a powerful V8 engine and trail-rated off-road performance as well.

It also is less expensive than the Murano.
If you like the Murano, but are looking for a seven-seat SUV, consider the Kia Sorento. It has the same compact proportions as the Murano, but offers an optional third row. It starts significantly less than the Murano as well, so you can either save your money or spend it on extra features. Testers say the Kia Sorento is a good combination of comfort, capability and value.

Details: Nissan Murano
The 2012 Nissan Murano comes in five trims: the base S, SV, SL, LE and the convertible CrossCabriolet. The LE is the most expensive hardtop model, while the CrossCabriolet is the most expensive overall. Minor trim changes for 2012 include a few new options packages and exterior colors.
